A pastor I follow on IG, Joseph Yoo, posed a question I have been thinking about a lot, and so I pose the same question to you. Where are you in the crowd? Matthew 21:10 reads:
When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?"
Jesus came in one gate while Herod and Pilate came in the other. Which gate would you have been at? I ask you again, where are you in that crowded city?
- Are you just a curious bystander, wondering what the fuss is all about?
- Are you looking away?
- Are you superficially excited in the moment, but then you forget as soon as he passes by?
- Are you there in solidarity of his mission, ready to pick up the cross when that day comes, even if there is a cost?
- Are you an organizer? Are you the one to find the donkey? Provide the food? The water? The tent? The first aid kit? Plan the route? Get the permits?
- Are you a counter protester? Are you the fly in the ointment, telling everyone what they can't do?
- Are you hiding, afraid of doing anything? (No decision is still a decision, by the way. Doing nothing always has an outcome, its just not one that you choose. Life will choose for you.)
Actions are far more powerful than words. It is easy to wave palms and cheer when the crowds are all around you doing the same. But what happens when the crowds turn the other way? Will your faith still stand? Or will your faith waver? Will you follow the crowd as it races after the latest shiny object?
Faith is an action statement, not a passive activity. So in the hustle and bustle of Holy Week, as we plan food and Easter Egg hunts and get out the new dresses and the cute photos and the Easter baskets and the cute doggy outfits, give some thought to the question - where are you in the crowd?
